Description: This dataset, was delineated using the best available historical records, cadastral and geospatial reference bases for the definition of the Ontonagon Reservation External Boundaries. The dataset optimal base scale of reference is 1/2,000, and should not be used to render with data at higher scale resolutions. The boundaries depicted in this data layer are for accurate reference purposes only. Boundary lines along the shorelines of the Keweenaw Bay and Huron Bay, are referenced to the water-line mark observed during the early Summer of 2020.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) within the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) provides the list of federally recognized Tribes and only provides legal boundary information when the Tribes need supporting records, if a boundary is based on treaty or another document that is historical or open to legal interpretation, or when another Tribal, State, or local government challenges the depiction of a reservation or off-reservation trust land.
