Description: The goal of the Addressing Coastal Erosion through Expansion of the Great Lakes Shoreviewer project was to improve knowledge and foster increased resilience for Michigan'sGreat Lakes coast with respect to coastal erosion risks and adaptation opportunities. The Great Lakes Shoreviewer(Shoreviewer) is a publicly accessible online tool that currently comprises color, digital, oblique-angle, GlobalPositioning System(GPS) referenced photographs paired with downloadable Geographic Information System(GIS) maps, which can assist coastal management, restoration, planning, and outdoor recreation (http://superiorwatersheds.org/shorelineviewer2011/). The Superior Watershed Partnership (SWP) acquired technical services from partners Applied Ecological Services(AES) and 906 Technologies to expand the application of the Shoreviewer through acquisition of multi-spectral, high resolution aerial imagery combined with spatial analysis that will produce a dataset descriptive of coastal erosion risk. Specific objectives of the project were: 1) to collectmulti-spectral,high resolution aerial imagery from study sites along the shoreline in Michigan, 2) to map and analyze shoreline erosion indicators based on literature review and land classification of the study sites, and 3) to expand the applicationof the Shoreviewer (in data, geographic extent and functionality) with the new aerial images, spatial data, and risk assessments from this project.For more details about source data, processing and final attributes, see the Final Report: Addressing Coastal Erosion through Expansion of the Great Lakes Shoreviewer submitted by Superior Watershed Partnership, January 29, 2016 or the Approved Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) for Addressing Coastal Erosion through Expansion of the Great lakes Shoreviewer submitted to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (Michigan Coastal Zone Management Program Grant Contract MDEQ Project # 14-CHasSP-003, April 10, 2015).Oblique angled photography was taken from low altitude airplane, allowing the observers to see into habitats over large areas, almost as if they were on the ground. This imagery is ideal for viewing hard to reach places and capturing the aesthetic beauty in a very unique way. Crisp, clear, high resolution images provided by low altitude and high end camera systems reveal unsurpassed value when evaluating and interpreting large shoreline areas. The imagery is collected at approximately 40 degree angle to nadir and photos overlap side to side as an aid to orientation for easier interpretation and continuous coverage. The geo-referenced photo points are hot-linked to a GIS application for orientation and interpretation and available via map clicks per the online tool. This effort will cover the full extent of the project however is multiple mobilizations are required due to weather AES will prioritize select reaches of the project extents.
