Aerial photos were collected in 1931 of Isle Royale National Park (ISRO). These images have been used for many purposes over the years, but were just recently scanned and made digital. The digital images were examined and approximate photo center locations were created to assist during future steps. The images are from the Abrams Aerial Survey Company and are the Isle Royal Aerial Survey cone c. 1931. Prints have been stored at ISRO headquarters. Many of the prints have been used for mapping purposes, some have deep grooves, clearly from using a ball point pen to draw polygons, most likely for a soil mapping project, and several of the prints have ink marks indicating features such as docks, buildings, etc. The grooves are not apparent on the scans. A total of 28 frames were missing from the archive held by ISRO. The original negatives were found to exist at the Archives of Michigan, located in Lansing, Michigan. Scans were requested of these frames, and all but 2 frames were available, and have been scanned, also at 1000dpi. These data will be used to help National Park Service staff examine the changes that have occurred on ISRO. Orthoregistered images were visually inspected and compared to the 1998 CIR DOQQs, a secondary inspection was completed using the 2009 DOQ. The time difference, age of photography, and condition of images all were factors in the ability of the image processors to achieve high levels of accuracy. All images underwent multiple alignment steps to achieve the most well fitting final product. Digital scans were previewed in Arc Catalog. Approximate photo center point was then created in ArcMap using the DOQQ as the referenced background image. 2008-12-12 Images were organized into manageable sections due to their size, to be processed by USGS Image Specialists Images were orthorectified using Orthomapper. 2009 Where images were not meeting positional standards, a stitching software was used to tie two or more images together. The intended use of all data in a park`s GIS library is to support diverse park activities including planning, management, maintenance, research, and interpretation. This data will be used by the USDA and/or USACE to generate contours for use in hydraulic/hydrologic model development, and for assessing environmental impacts. An ESRI shapefile showing the project sites, square miles, and deliverables has been provided to Sanborn. LIDAR will be collected on average of 2 meter point spacing or better and vertical accuracy of 15 centimeters RMSE, on bare, flat ground and the 90% confidence level is required. The project area will be flown in early fall, 2004, weather permitting.
